I was talking with a girlfriend this weekend who opened up and started talking about some of the struggles she’s been having with anxiety.
I thought it was important to share a bit of our conversation in case you or someone you know may be having similar struggles.
As long as I have known her, she has struggled with her weight.
There was often a new nutrition plan or exercise routine she was trying.
Yet, it never seemed to help her…the weight stayed despite all the hard work she was doing.
While we were talking, she talked about how she would:
Eat as a way of trying to cope with her anxiety.
Now it all made sense!
No wonder she’d been struggling with her weight for many years.
I actually believe many more people struggle with this & may not even realize they are doing it.
One of the two commitments she made to herself is she joined a gym & is intent on getting there 5 times a week.
The other one is to NOT STOP at the store on her way home from work.
It turns out this is her real trigger point…
Every night, on her way home from work, she would stop at the store and buy a bag of chips or a bag of candy to eat once she got home.
What made this situation even worse is she wouldn’t get home until 9:00pm!
All this FOOD was extra calories!
As I explained to her, FOOD is only a temporary relief.
It really does nothing to impact the anxiety – only “covers” it up so a person doesn’t feel it temporarily.
Which sets this whole cycle in motion…
A person has to KEEP eating to get relief.
It can become very difficult to stop this cycle when you’re in the middle of it.
So my hope is, if you or someone you know seems to be struggling with their weight, you can use this post as a starting point.
The question to ask yourself or that loved one in a caring moment is this:
“Do you think it’s possible that anxiety may be impacting your life?”
