This column is dedicated to giving you the “tools” needed to have a lifetime
of wellness and recovery.
As the traffic suddenly came to a stop, I glanced at the clock on my
dashboard. It said 1:32pm.
There was still plenty of time to get to my 2:00 appointment.
I was meeting Debbie to drop off 15 copies of my book, The Benefits of Smoking,
which were being distributed to women in the CJFHC’s Mom’s Quit program.
Having made the trip several times, I knew it would take about 45 minutes.
To keep things low stress, I gave myself an hour to get there! (This is one of
the best ways I reduce my stress levels!)
As I sat there, it seemed like an hour had passed….. All traffic had come to a
standstill & I found myself wondering if there had been an accident.
As I glanced again at the clock, I could feel my stress levels starting to rise!
I began to think:
“What am I going to do? I didn’t get her number so I can’t even call to let her
know I am caught in traffic and running late.”
I quickly realized what I was doing! I was doing exactly what my late mentor,
Trime, had spent her life teaching people:
“With our thoughts we make our world.”
At this moment in time – I was choosing to focus on the thoughts above!
By doing so, I was creating my own stress! It wasn’t so much the traffic –
it was my OWN thoughts about the traffic.
I quickly changed the thought from “What am I gong to do?” to the following:
“I am where I am supposed to be!”
As I kept repeating this thought aloud for a few minutes, I could feel the
stress starting to leave my body.
I started feeling CALM! Just a few moments later, the traffic started to move!
As I made my way thru the DOUBLE lane closure, I sent of a little thank you
to Trime (She passed away this past November but I still feel as a guide in my life!)
It was then I decided I needed to share this experience and POWERFUL
LifeTOOL with you!
The next time you start to feel stress showing up –
Check your thinking!
As Trime said many times: “Most of the problems we have – we create with
our OWN thoughts.”
We can CHOOSE to change those thoughts!
