As I was driving the other day, I started to think about just where I am in my life…
And in doing so, I caught myself having this thought:
‘If I’d only know then what I know now.’
Every now and then, this sneaks in to my brain! But I don’t let it stick around.
I know that I am only here today, able to write this post for you BECAUSE I’ve been where I was.
One of my favorite quotes I came up with is this:
“We have been where we were to get where we are: TODAY!”
I’d have to say that I think I’ve heard the “If only I’d known” hundreds of times over my years working with patients in treatment programs.
So many people, often who’ve been suffering with symptoms for years & even decades, wishing they could have gotten help sooner.
I like to point that knowing something sooner doesn’t mean a better outcome or that it would change things for the better.
I know for myself, the years of suffering with my depression symptoms has made me want to work at recovery that much harder.
Who knows if I would have cared so much about recovery if I’d known about the depression say 30 years ago! Plus, medication & treatment we have today wasn’t there 30 years ago either!
One of my other favorite quotes I came up with for my patients builds on the last one is this:
“Where we ARE, doesn’t have to be where we stay!”
So, don’t feel trapped by where you are today – because you have the power to steer your life in a whatever direction you want to go!
