I was just reading through the recent Esperanza Magazine (Spring, 2017)
for a second time.
In the Mailbag section, I was struck by the comments having to do with
motivation or should I say ‘lack of motivation.’
Margaret Lanning had written a column “When I Don’t Want To” in the
winter, 2017 issue, in which she shared her experiences in dealing with a
lack of motivation.
I know first hand how this can be one of the more challenging symptoms
of depression and lends itself to keeping people STUCK.
Today, I wanted to share my strategy for dealing with this symptom when
it shows up in my life.
Not only has this LifeTOOL worked well for me, it has worked for hundreds
of patients I’ve taught it to over the past 25 years!
I first wrote about this LifeTOOL back in 2014 in regards to relapse.
It’s based on the concept of the game: TUG O’WAR!
Close your eyes and picture in your mind the following:
There is a long rope with a team on each side. They are pulling back and
forth on the rope. One team trying to take control of the other team!
Ultimately, the side that is stronger wins!
Now, I want you to use that same visual for you and your depression.
On one side of the TUG O’WAR rope is you.
On the other side are all the symptoms of your depression to show up that day.
If you do NOTHING, the symptoms will WIN and pull you deeper in to the
pit of depression.
Do something, anything to counter the symptom & you prevent it from winning!
When it comes to lack of motivation or the feelings of “I don’t want to’ –
remember this example!
Whatever it is you ‘don’t want to’ do – push yourself to do it a little bit.
This is the work we must do to help the medication as we start to reclaim our
lives from the depression.
Yes, it is a lot of work!
But the choice is a simple one:
Do something, anything = RECOVERY!
Do nothing = Staying stuck in the illness.
