Esperanza Hope To Cope: These Are Sometimes the Most Important Limits to Set

10/4/2018

by Carol L. Rickard

As is usually the case whenever I’m driving somewhere, I turn on the radio and listen to NPR.

One of my favorites is to watch or listen to the BBC News Hour. I think it’s because I love learning & this show gives me the chance to learn about the world!

But this day was different…

As I turned it on, there was a special broadcast airing of the senate testimony.

Now, be sure, this post is not about politics! No, instead it is about something so much more important to our health & wellness.

It is about recognizing when we need to set limits with OURSELVES.

This is a critical LifeTOOL because NO ONE can do it for us – it is 100% OUR responsibility!

So, what am I talking about?

When we are in situations that might not be good for us, we need to take action and

Set Limits With Ourselves!

Now, you may be thinking, ‘Okay Carol, I get it. But how do we do this?’

Here’s HOW –

Remove yourself from the situation.

There are a variety of situations where this might apply. Let’s take a look at a few of them:

Example #1:
You have a family member, who despite several conversation you’ve had with them, thinks if you just work a little harder you won’t be depressed or anxious.

Example #2:
There’s a coworker who continues to make fun of people and doesn’t seem to care about anyone but themselves.

Example #3:
You’re watching television and the news comes on. While they are covering a story, you find yourself having a strong emotional reaction to what you are taking in. (Only you know what is too much)

The key to using this LifeTOOL is this:

When a situation starts to impact you in a way that may compromise your wellness…

Remove yourself from the situation!
