This past week, I did my Stress Mastery training for the staff of a cardiology practice.
In each training or workshop I do, I like to share I am a person living with a mental
health condition & a little bit about my recovery journey!
As it turned out, one of the women shared how her son’s anxiety gets bad at night.
She said they use a white noise machine & a calming aromatherapy scent in his room.
She’s concerned because that doesn’t seem to be working…. he’s still pretty anxious.
He’s only 10 and she’s trying to determine if the anxiety can be managed at home or
if she might need to take him for some professional help.
I told her that although she’d taken good steps by using the noise machine & the
aromatherapy, it wouldn’t work because:
It was ONLY Step 1.
In order for him to get some relief:
He’d also need to DO Step 2!
Now, you might be wondering, ‘Carol, WHAT are you talking about? What do you
mean Step 2?’
So here is what I teach in my workshops:
If you take a bottle of soda or seltzer & shake it up pretty good – what happens?
A lot of pressure builds up inside the bottle.
If you STOP shaking the bottle – what happens?
The pressure STOPS building up!
But, what happens to the pressure already created inside the bottle?
NOTHING! IT’S STILL THERE!!!
It will not go away until we DO something to RELEASE IT!
This same thing happens to people:
Life shakes us up & the pressure builds up inside of us!
We can do something calming to STOP the build up in side of us….
However, that still leaves the pressure already created inside & still affecting us!
So successfully managing ‘our pressure build up’ requires a 2 Step Process:
Step 1 – STOP the build up (Do Something calming)
Step 2 – RELEASE what’s there (Do something active)
This made sense to her!
In fact, she shared with us that just the night before her son had said this to her:
“I don’t need you to stay with me, but can you come in and talk with me for a few
minutes like you did last night?”
Talking was the RELEASE that was missing!
