Esperanza Hope To Cope: How We Can Make Things WORSE!

by Carol L. Rickard

I was reminded this week of the great power of our mind!

It truly is the greatest LifeTOOL we have at our disposal and thus can have the
biggest impact in our lives, our health, and our recovery.

The challenge lies in that our mind has the power to either HELP US or hurt us,
depending on how we use it.

The question is:

How are you using yours?

I wasn’t using mine so wisely & found I was HURTING myself by making
things worse.

I’d had a few situations happen that left me feeling a tremendous amount
of sadness.

At times, the heaviness of the sadness seemed to paralyze me – I’d find myself
just sitting down and crying.

Over the course of the day, I started to notice a pattern:

The intensity of the sadness seemed to be higher when I kept thinking &
focusing on the SITUATIONS.

This is how we can end up making things worse!

Focusing our attention on the SITUATION only adds fuel to the fire.

Have you ever noticed that the more you focus on a specific situation, the
stronger the feeling gets?

Instead, what we want to do is: Focus on the feeling!

We do this by acknowledging and honoring our feelings, then releasing
them in a healthy way. (that’s what many of my posts have been about!)

In fact, the more we talk about the SITUATION instead of the feelings we
have about the situation
– the WORSE we can make it.

Once I realized what I was doing, I shifted my focus and attention to:

  1. Honoring the sadness I was feeling
  2. Letting myself cry.
  3. Then writing it all down so I could let go of it.

So, if you find yourself overwhelmed by a particular feeling or emotion –

Check to make sure that you aren’t accidently making things WORSE by
focusing on the SITUATION!
