When trying to accomplish your wellness goals, just changing one word when describing your goal can make a major difference.

I’ve been reading a great book, The Motivation Myth by Jeff Haden and I want to share something I recently read which I believe can help you accomplish your wellness goals.

Come to think of it, I’ve heard it before, however, it didn’t hit me the same way as when I recently read it!

What is the one word?

CAN’T

Research has shown people have a greater likelihood to FAIL when using this word to try and reach their goals:

Examples:

“I can’t miss my workout at the gym.”

“I can’t isolate myself.”

“I can’t miss doses of my medications.”

So, what are we supposed to say? The word they tested against CAN’T was:

DON’T

The research showed how replacing the “can’t” with the word “DON’T” will actually increase a person’s level of success!

Examples:

“I DON’T miss my workout at the gym.”

“I DON’T isolate myself.”

“I DON’T miss doses of my medication.”

I’d like to ask you to read through both sets of examples again…even say them out loud. Do you notice any difference?

When we use the word “can’t” we are giving ourselves a way out and turning it into a choice.

The word “DON’T” takes away that choice and just as importantly, has us BE the person following through!

I like to think of it this way…

Can’t = Maybe

DON’T = Never!

One last thing I want to share with you is my WordTool:

This comes from my series of self-growth books: “WordTools for Wellness” & “WordTools for Self-Esteem.”

Words are powerful!

And research has shown--one word CAN equal the difference between success & failure.

Choose your words wisely!

Let me know your thoughts in the comment box below.
