If you feel that your thoughts are stuck on an internal “conveyor belt” remembering to stay in the present and make plans can help you avoid paralyzing anxiety.
By Carol Rickard
I was talking with a girlfriend of mine the other day when a new idea came to me and I want to share it here with you!
She was sharing about an upcoming job interview she has this week.
She’s been at her present job for the past 8 years & there’s a lot of uncertainty in her company as to whether their contract will be renewed again.
The position she is interviewing for would involve a lot of BIG changes in her life…
And here is where she got stuck on the “Thought Conveyor Belt!”
She started out talking about the interview and some of the things that were stressing her out about it. But…
She then went on to thoughts that were WAY PAST the interview, like no longer working from home, what she would do about yoga, and on and on and on.
She started to get carried away in thoughts!
That’s when I came up with the Thought Conveyor Belt--I noticed she was getting carried away and becoming paralyzed by thinking too much.
The difference between thinking about the future to plan & the Thought Conveyor Belt is that the thinking process quickly becomes hijacked by EMOTIONS!
The emotions then become overwhelming and we get PARALYZED—lost in the future we have no control over.
The LifeTOOL to use in this situation is:
One Day At A Time!
The critical actions to take are:
- Become aware you have been carried away by the Thought Conveyor Belt.
- Bring yourself back to TODAY!
- Do your planning while staying present in TODAY!
Let me know in the comment box below if you can relate.
