I noticed I ‘d been feeling a little more anxious these days and I decided to do a little detective work to see what was contributing to this.
Before I could get started figuring this out, the first thing I needed to do was to clean my desk off.
Because I’d been pretty busy these past few weeks, things started to PILE UP on my desk.
It was a mess!!
Here’s what I discovered accidentally in the process cleaning up my desk:
It was my environment that was fueling my anxiety.
As soon as I was done cleaning and straightening up my desk – I found my level of anxiety dropped!
It occurred to me how this can be another sneaky way the symptoms of depression and anxiety can work against us and make things WORSE.
Well, once the anxiety or depression get to a certain level, they can begin to interfere with our ADL’s: activities of daily living.
So, we don’t have the energy, focus, or ability to take care of things… this means there’s a lot that starts to back up in our living space.
I remember working with one woman who did not check her mail for 6 months!
The double whammy here is that not only does this chaotic environment fuel the anxiety, it can leave you feeling so overwhelmed with where to begin.
Here is the way out:
Step 1: Make yourself do a little everyday – whether you feel like it or not.
Step 2: Set the timer on your phone for 5 minutes. Do whatever you can do in that 5 minutes. (If you find once you get started you can go a little longer – than do so!)
Step 3: Give yourself some credit for taking action!
What you will begin to notice is that as your environment starts to clear away, your level of anxiety or depression will decrease to match!
