When you feel stuck and unhappy with aspects of your life, it’s important to ask yourself: is there a habit I can change?
By Carol Rickard
I’ve been listening to one of my old personal development programs this week as I drive around. I love learning & relearning new LifeTOOLS!
On this particular section, they were talking about a trip taken to Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco & how the park rangers said no one had ever escaped.
And how this got them thinking about a prison which has ‘no bars’ and yet keeps millions of people trapped every day…
The Prison of Habit
I can think of nothing more powerful & within our control that shapes our lives than a HABITS.
Its power comes from the fact it is invisible, present all the time, and most importantly, leads people to believe there is nothing they can do about it.
Countless people can be heard saying: “That’s just the way I am.” Maybe you’ve even said this about yourself…
There is something we can do about it!
We can change it!
So how do we tell if a HABIT is keeping us trapped in a prison and needs to be changed?
Take a look at the following areas of your life:
Ask yourself this question for each area:
“Am I happy with the RESULTS in each of these areas?”
If the answer is YES—congratulations! It seems as though your HABITS are helping you rather than hurting you.
If the answer is NO—ask yourself this follow-up question:
“What do I need to DO differently than what I am presently doing?”
Or another way to look at this is: “What am I presently DOING or NOT DOING that is giving me this result?”
Health Result = Not feeling better – (DOING – Missing does of medication)
Relationship Result = Feeling lonely – (NOT DOING – going to social events)
Work Result = Hate my job – (DOING – Settling for what I know)
So let’s say you discover you have some HABITS keeping you trapped in an “Invisible Prison’--
Stay tuned to next week’s post where I will share with you…
How to break out of these ‘Invisible Prisons’!
In the meantime, leave me a comment below sharing what HABIT you would like to change!
