Esperanza Hope To Cope: Are You Living on Autopilot?

by Carol L. Rickard

If you feel stuck with problems that just don’t seem to quit, there are ways you can recognize if you are handling them on “autopilot.”

I went over to my neighbor’s for pizza the other night. We got talking and the next thing you know, it was 3 hours later!

She is going through some relationship issues and really appreciated the opportunity to talk with someone other than her family.

An important concept we started talking about was “getting caught in the same old patterns of behavior“—when you find yourself doing the same thing over & over again AND ending up back at the same place each time!

I like to call this “Autopilot.”

In her case, it involves romantic relationships…but actually it can happen in any area of life, including:

  • Relationships / Marriage
  • Work / Career
  • Wellness & Recovery
  • Managing Emotions
  • Family
  • Friends / Neighbors

Rather than waiting for that “Ah-Ha Moment” to arrive (like it did for my neighbor!), I used to teach my patients to be proactive!

And here’s how:

Step 1:

Using a scale from 1 to 10, 1 =”‘not good” & 10 = “great”, assess each of the above mentioned areas in your life.

For any area which receives less than a 7, ask yourself: “What do I need to change in order to get it above a 7?”

Step 2:

Make the change! And if you aren’t sure what to do or are struggling in trying to make the change, it may be time to use the help of a therapist or counselor.

Let me know in the comments section the one area you discovered that you need to make some change in!
