This is a difficult conversation to have yet a very important one…
First, let me just say this. I don’t mean you are ‘playing depressed’ or you
are ‘playing anxious’.
NO – these are very REAL disorders that paralyze us.
What I mean is: Could it be that your brain, unbeknownst to you, is
holding on to staying sick?
Our brain works on two different levels!
The conscious level is what we are completely aware of – like the words
you are reading right now.
The unconscious level, or subconscious as some call it, operates without us
even being aware that it is! (Like the undercurrent in a river we can’t see!)
Which is why, people can sometimes stay STUCK or SICK even though they
are trying to do everything to get well.
And despite that, it just doesn’t seem to be happening.
Another way this process is described: SELF-SABOTAGE.
It was at least once a month I’d have someone I was working with who had
this happening to them and they weren’t even aware of it.
It was only after introducing an exercise I created and had them do that
they learned what was going on!
This is one of the MOST valuable reasons for working with a therapist – they can
often help us discover what’s going on in our brain we may not even be aware of!
So I want to share the exercise with you today. I call it:
“The Self-Sabotage Radar”
