Living with bipolar can be very challenging but it is possible to develop the tools to maintain a high-functioning lifestyle.
So, you know for many of us who have had this illness for a while you know that life can be overwhelming. It’s overwhelming for anybody, right? Well, when it comes to living with bipolar it can be even more so. Dealing with finances can be difficult. Finding a job. Keeping a job can be overwhelming. You know, dealing with family and friends that may not understand or be supportive of our illness. All these things can be difficult. Also learning to take care of ourselves can be overwhelming as well. And I’ve struggled in all these areas myself. And it took a while for me to develop the tools to learn how to manage and be successful.
You know I’ve found for myself I’ve found things like learning to take medication properly. Exercise is important. Developing other tools like having good sleep, Balancing life; having a good routine is important too. So when you think about it, it takes time. It’s a process and it isn’t done overnight but with being persistent and persevering it definitely can be possible for all of us to do better. And it is all something we can get better at.
So you know, when I think about it I’ve had some challenges. I have two daughters and I’m married. Both of my daughters are in college. My father, actually I was the caregiver for him for several years. He unfortunately passed away this past September and that was very overwhelming and very challenging. I found I was still able to maintain all those things and the way I got to this was I took on responsibilities gradually. You know, for instance I took on, early on in my life, temp jobs which led to permanent jobs. I began to take on responsibilities, you know, like volunteering at my church or getting involved in my addiction recovery program.
So all these things kind of helped me to grow and develop and to mature. In the end, they’ve been a really big help and I’ve learned that nowadays I’m able to, you know, maintain my lifestyle and do things more than I thought I ever could.
So what do you do to maintain your high functioning lifestyle? How do you maintain and deal with all these challenges? Feel free to leave a comment below.
