Esperanza Hope To Cope: What Are Pile Ups Costing You?

by Carol L. Rickard

I was talking with a girlfriend last Friday who’d experienced a REALLY stressful week at work.

Quite honestly, she was a stress mess!

In addition to the headache she’d had for two days, her back pain had started to act up again, AND her sleep was a wreck because she kept thinking about work!

Since we’re close friends, I felt comfortable telling her exactly what I thought was going on & why she was responsible for getting to this place.

I said: “You know what happens to you when you have a stress “Pile Up”. You’ve had a really stressful week & did NOTHING to deal with the stress as the week went on.”

“Now, you’re left dealing with ALL THE STRESS that’s “Piled Up” and it’s kicked your butt!”

I know because I’ve done the same thing myself – only I landed in my doctor’s office 3 weeks in a row with horrible migraines!

She acknowledged I was right and asked for some suggestions. The key I told her was to do the following things for JUST 60 seconds. (Who can’t do 60 seconds?!)

  1. Pick out a few songs on a play list you find relaxing & listen to them.
  2. Find a scented lotion or oil that is calming & relaxing – use it!
  3. Do jumping jacks, some stairs, or run in place.
  4. Go to your car or someplace where you can just SCREAM!
  5. Do A “Dump & Destroy” – this is when you write on paper, don’t read, & DESTROY IT!

You MUST DO a few calming things AND a few active things to create the release throughout your day!

So, what helps you avoid “Pile Up’s” during your day? Let me know in the comment box below!
